 LITHUANIAN NATIONAL DISHES

What is to be in a country and miss trying its national dishes? Here are five most traditional and famous Lithuanian dishes one shouldn‘t miss trying while in Lithuania.

Lithuanian cuisine - Rye Bread

Traditionally, the most important item of Lithuanian cuisine is dark rye bread. It is used more often than light wheat bread. The dough is usually based on a sourdough starter, and includes some wheat flour to lighten the finished product. Lithuanians eat a lot of bread every day and respect it very much. We never throw out any piece of bread.

Lithuanian cuisine - Cepelinai

Cepelinai or didžkukuliai are a Lithuanian national dish. They are a type of dumplings made from grated potatoes and usually stuffed with minced meat, although sometimes dry cottage cheese or mushrooms are used instead. Although foreigners don’t like cepelinai very much, most Lithuanians wouldn’t be able to live without them.

Lithuanian cuisine - Lithuanian Mead

Midus is a type of Lithuanian mead, an alcoholic beverage distilled from grain, honey and water. Although Lithuanians’ ancestors were using mead for thousands of years, people drink Lithuanian mead very rarely today. However, anyone who wishes to try something traditional or ancient, should try it.

Lithuanian cuisine - Vedarai

Vėdarai refers to various types of sausages stuffed with filling made from grated potatoes. To be honest, lots of Lithuanian dishes are based on potatoes, and, as we joke sometimes, it’s hard to imagine what we would do if Christopher Columbus hadn‘t discovered America and introduced potatoes to Europe. It is highly recommended to anyone who wishes to taste something new.

Lithuanian cuisine - Cottage Cheese

Lithuanians use both fresh and sour milk. Very popular is soft and hard cottage cheese. Believe it, it’s delicious! To make it, you have to heat sour milk first, then strain the curds in a linen bag and, finally, press them into a hard piece.

Honestly, Lithuanians may not have the tastiest food in the world, but their cuisine is really worth trying.
